You may be a new guide and feel a bit overwhelmed. Or you may be a seasoned guide and are looking for some new motivation. This last year has been difficult for our industry.

And it’s not always easy to find the information that you need. So we decided to compile some for you. We have experience building startups in the digital travel sector, and these are some of the lessons we’ve learned along the way.

Be passionate. Look for an audience or market that you’re passionate about. Know your WHY. This is important because if you don’t know why you are a guide, people won’t be encouraged to book with you even once or as a repeat customer.

Be genuine. Build genuine relationships, in-person and online. In-person isn’t an option for many of us but online communities are thriving. Be excited and active with your business and connect with your community. Comment on posts, engage with them, and build friendships; it’s a small world, and your reputation matters.

Be agile. Make sure whatever you build can be modified without a lot of effort. Not every idea is going to work, and you need to be willing to iterate. So, experiment, don’t be afraid to make mistakes. Take advantage of every failure and see it as an opportunity to learn.

Be different. Diversity and inclusion are so important. Use your tour to challenge the status quo and be a part of what you think the world needs more of. What particular skills, personality traits, or interests can you use to be a better guide in your community?

Be hard-working. It’s not all about being sexy or appealing. There is a lot of hard work that goes into building something, whether it be a startup or running your own tour business. Putting in hard work is necessary to have a successful business.

Be positive. Celebrate little wins and enjoy the ride. Building something you are excited about is key to building something great. Putting yourself out there is not always easy, but it’s important to think big and be positive.

No matter what kind of guide you want to be, it’s essential to research and learn from others to be the best you can be. What lesson or lessons are you going to use to help build a tour that you believe in? As a guide, what can you do to make sure your tour is the best it can be for your community?

We hope this has helped. Let’s make 2021 an incredible year for guides and small businesses all over the world!
