Commission

A commission is a percentage of sales that a reseller will charge to acquire paying customers for a Tour Host. A common practice in the tour and activity industry is to pay from 10% and up to 30% commission to resellers.

Destination Management Company

Business that specialized in promoting and very often reselling tours and accommodations related to the specific area where they operate from. They offer an advanced knowledge of a destination.

Inbound tour operators

Bring travellers into a country as a group or through individual tour packages (e.g., a package from China to visit the UK).

Online Travel Agency

An online travel agency can be utilized by a traveler in order to book everything they need for their trip in one place. They are not travel agents, and they do not operate the tours. They represent the various products of tourism suppliers to tour operators in other markets in a business-to-business (B2B) relationship. Receptive tour operators are key to selling packages to overseas markets and creating awareness around possible products.

Reseller

Someone who markets and resells tours and activities in exchange for commission fee, also known as agent. Examples include Get Your Guide.

Tour Host

A person located in a tourist destination who provides a unique, local activity for a visitor to do while on vacation. Examples of such activities include kayaking, bike riding or arts and crafts, among others.aka. Tour Facilitators, Guides, Leaders, Directors, Activity Provider

Tour Operator

A person or company who packages all or most of the components of an offered trip and then sells them to the traveller. The operator often points out local points of interest as well as answers questions to their customers. These packages can also be sold through retail outlets or travel agencies. The term is broadly use in the industry and can include dive centers, surf schools, bike rental and all sort of activity providers. There are 3 sub-types: Inbound Tour Operators, Outbound Tour Operators, Receptive Tour Operators (RTOs)

A travel agency is a business that operates as the intermediary between the travel industry (supplier) and the traveller (purchaser). Part of the role of the travel agency is to market prepackaged travel tours and holidays to potential travellers.

Yield management is a complex science used by accommodation and airlines for decades. It is increasing or decreasing the price based on demand. Yield management is integrated in most online reservation/booking software.
